This International Standard describes a sampling and analysis procedure for the determination of formaldehyde (HCHO) and other carbonyl compounds (aldehydes and ketones) that involves collection from air onto cartridges coated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNPH) and subsequent analysis by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with detection by ultraviolet absorption. The method is specific for formaldehyde but, with modification, at least 12 other carbonyl compounds in the concentration range of approximately 1 µg/m3 to 1 mg/m3 can be detected and quantified.
