Fiber optics is one of the most important assets of a service provider. Most, if notall, of its revenue passes through different types of fibers in different types ofnetworks, such as long haul, metropolitan or enterprise. Protecting thisinvestment is key to the service providers and private networks.

Cables are responsible for keeping the fibers from harmful agents such ashumidity, mechanical stresses and chemicals. Well-designed and installedcables can maintain fibers operating properly for 20 years or more.In order to reach users the cables must pass through the most inhospitableenvironments, such as cold and humid undergrounds, hot and dry deserts, belowrivers and oceans, high-voltage power lines, etc.

Because of that, cables, the same way as fibers, must comply with specificapplications, which can push their components to their limits. The purpose of thisdocument is to characterize application environments and cable types, andprovide guidance on which cable types should be used in which environments.
