THIS PAPER PRESENTS AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO DESIGNING EXPERT SYSTEMS FOR ROBOT SELECTION. THE DESIGN STRUCTURE CONSIDERS THE NECESSARY INTERFACE BETWEEN A KNOWLEDGE BASE SYSTEM, DATABASE SYSTEMS, COST ANALYSIS SPREAD-SHEETS, AND OTHER EXTERNAL PROGRAMS. WITH SUCH AN INTEGRATIVE DESIGN APPROACH, THE INTERACTIONS OF THE QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE ROBOT SELECTION, INSTALLATION, AND MANAGEMENT CAN BE BETTER UNDERSTOOD. CONSEQUENTLY, THE SUCCESS RATE OF ROBOTICS RESEARCH AND IMPLEMENTATION CAN BE IMPROVED. THIS PAPER ALSO PRESENTS TWO CASE STUDIES OF THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION OF THE SUGGESTED DESIGN APPROACH.
