The effects of urban runoff used to recharge groundwater basins in the Fresno, California, area are discussed. The study, which was part of the US Environmental Protection Agency's nationwide urban runoff program, was undertaken to determine the environmental effects of the current practice of retention and recharge of urban storm runoff and to identify and evaluate management practices than can be used to alleviate adverse effects. Results of runoff monitoring and soil and groundwater monitoring programs for metals, organics, and pesticides are provided. The effects of recharge on water supply and recreation (13 of the district's recharge basins are used for recreation) are discussed. Currently, there are no apparent adverse effects on the groundwater resulting from recharge of urban storm runoff. The opportunity for soil ingestion of lead from the district's recreational basins was determined to be limited since the basins are entirely turfed with the exception of three baseball diamonds in three basins. Recommended management practices are listed. Includes tables, figures.
