The Denver Water Board is constructing a new water recycling plant to reclaim secondary effluent from the Metro Wastewater Reclamation District's wastewater treatment plant (Metro). Reclaimed water will be used for turf irrigation, cooling water for the Xcel Energy Cherokee Power Plant, process water for industrial plants, and other small uses. The project will consist of a source water pump station and pipeline, a treatment plant, a high service pump station, and a distribution system with satellite reservoirs and pump stations. The first phase of this project will have a capacity of 30 million gallons per day (mgd). The ultimate build-out capacity for the plant will be 45 mgd. Evaluation of the numerous treatment technologies available to meet the established water quality goals began in the fall of 1997 and was concentrated on the primary unit processes of clarification and filtration. Clarification technologies investigated included conventional, tube, inclined plate, solids contact, and sand-ballasted. Filtration technologies investigated included conventional (flocculation, sedimentation, filtration), in-line, direct, continuous backwash, and membrane. After evaluating these processes from a non-monetary and monetary standpoint, conventional filtration, in-line filtration, direct filtration, and membrane filtration were selected for further evaluation through pilot testing. A three month pilot study was conducted to evaluate in-line, direct, and conventional filtration and a five month pilot study was conducted to evaluate a pressure-driven membrane system and a vacuum-driven membrane system. Based on the design and operating parameters collected from these pilot tests, a non-monetary and monetary comparison of these treatment processes was made, which resulted in the selection of conventional filtration. Manufacturer selection for the inclined plate clarification system and the filter underdrain system was then made. Final design and the subsequent construction followed through a design-build process. Includes tables, figures.
