Full Description

The coastal region of Georgia is experiencing saltwater intrusion north of Savannah, Georgia at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and north of the Georgia-Florida border at Brunswick, Georgia. The saltwater intrusion is impacting drinking water sources and has prompted the Georgia Environmental Protection Division to develop alternatives to help alleviate saltwater intrusion in the region. As part of this effort, a group of technical experts from around the world gathered for a 2-day facilitated meeting to discuss saltwater intrusion and the most promising methods for alleviating it. The technical experts included specialists in the mechanisms of saltwater intrusion who also had experience with real-world solutions to the problem. Their experience was gained from the hands-on implementation of solutions developed for various regions around the world: from the Netherlands to California; and, from New York to Florida. This paper summarizes the results of the panel discussion on the most promising methods to alleviate saltwater intrusion. It provides an overview of the various technologies available and the benefits and drawbacks to each as applied to the Georgia coast. It also summarizes the key aspects of the panel's decision-making process, including the points surrounding the short-listing of technologies and the concluding remarks. The paper concentrates on those technologies the experts believed are the most promising for the Georgia coast, including the reasoning behind the conclusion. Includes tables, figure.
