Elastomeric materials are commonlyused in water distribution systems. However,when these materials are exposed to chloramines, rapiddegradation has been observed. Consequently, it isimportant to consider how these materials degrade(swelling, strength, elongation) when selecting theappropriate materials to use in water systems.The purpose of this study was to assess degradationcharacteristics and develop life prediction models forelastomeric materials exposed to chloramines. Based onthe testing, it is clear that elastomer materials have uniquereactions to chloramine-induced degradation. It is thereforenecessary to match the necessary elastomer performance(elongation, swelling, strength) characteristics withconsiderations regarding long-term degradation. Bymatching the degradation trends with intended use, elastomeric-based failures can be reduced in the future.The results of this research will help water utilitiesselect more appropriate elastomeric components for usein their systems. Ultimately, this will benefit the supplierand the rate payer through better performingmaterials and longer design lives. Includes 22 references, tables, figures.
