Full Description

To overcome the challenges of an aging water distributionsystem in meeting the City's water service level goals, Wilmington Department of PublicWorks (DPW) has started an integrated multi-year program for replacing and rehabilitating thewater distribution network. The distribution network improvement program uses a multi-objectiveproject investment optimization model based on data from water main conditionassessment, hydraulic performance analysis, and valve exercising and fire hydrant testingprojects. Geospatial Information System (GIS) based data models of water main breaks andwater quality complaints, combined with hydraulic performance simulation models are beingused in the selection and prioritization of asset renewal projects.Five years into the program, the City has successfully transitioned to a GIS based water assetinformation system. The first phase of the program, which included projects for valverehabilitation and replacement, and water main cleaning and lining have been completed.The program has enabled the City to achieve its water service level goals while renewing thedistribution network to ensure long-term sustainability of the service levels.
